Where the wild things are was the theme for this weeks lesson. We worked on the importance of getting 60 minutes of exercise per day. We used animals and compared them in the categories of slow, flexible , strength, and fast physical activity. We drew pictures of animals that best described how we feel about physical activity and why.

Variety, balance and Moderation were on hand for this lesson. We used the pyramid to place foods at the base, middle, or the top. We then gave the base foods the green light, to eat all we want. The middle foods got the yellow caution light, be careful when eating these foods. The red light went to the foods at the tip. Stop and think before we eat these foods. We ended our lesson playing a form of red light, green light, yellow light using food model cards.

Our 1st week with Marty focused on germs and that they are everywhere. We conducted an experiment with fake germs and a black light in the dark to see how well we wash our hands. We learned we cant get rid of them all, but with warm water, soap, and a little scrubbing for 20 seconds we can make a huge difference.

Wow, I am so impressed. The Food group experts started presenting to the class. We had games, power points, posters, a news report and even a video. The students used their imaginations and had fun. They topped off each presentation with what they liked and what they would change about their presentations. Very positive outcomes for the classes by their peers.

This week was a collabrative effort from all the students to find Positive words for Healthy living in magazines. We then put them into a collage poster to hang on the wall. We are working on how the media plays a role in affecting our health.  A healthy sampling of vegetables ended our lesson.

Our first week we talked all about Marty Moose and how we want him to learn to be Smarty Moose. The kids brainstomed ways he could do that over the next 10 weeks of nutrition. We finished the lesson with samplings of the 5 food groups.

This week we cued in on our health. Talked about  ways to listen to your body when you are exercising, tired, sick and especially when it comes to eating. We used a balloon to represent the stomach. When you are hungry it has no air, when you are full it it about half blowed up, and when you are stuffed it exploded. We ended the lesson with 5 food groups for snack.

For the last few weeks we have been getting creative working in groups on being Food Experts. The groups worked on putting together their ideas for presenting the Food group they chose to the class. It included foods in the group, major nutrient, benefits, amounts needed to include a healthy portion size, and any interesting facts. I must say they are all very creative. I look forward to the presentations over the next few weeks.

This week we concentrated on Food Safety and the Danger Zone. We shared experiences we have had at home with spoiled perishable goods and Food bourne illness. We rounded out the class with the movie Perils at the Picnic.

5th Grade Sizzles

Wow today was an awesome experience teaching your kids. They taught me. We picked pictures of doors that they felt expressed their hopes and dreams for their futures. We also talked about gifts and what they mean. The last part of the class they wrote thank you cards to people of their choice, to thank them for things that were important to them. They will deliver them, placing them strategically to be found by that person.  We don’t say thanks often enough for the simple everyday things.
